No more tags

I’ve removed all tags and redone them as categories with parent category “Tag”. The tag cloud was a cool and mildly useful graphic but the free WordPress account had annoying restrictions on the use of tags: by default tag links would link to a general WordPress.com tag search results page; if I wanted tags to link to a tag search results page for this blog I had to set the blog to be “Private” which meant inaccessible to search engines. Redoing the tags as categories gets around this, but I have to do without the tag cloud. The category cloud widget is not a sensible option as you have to use category IDs (instead of category names) for the exclude list.

One day, with time and money, I shall host this blog on a site of my own, on a django-based blog engine.
