the five solas

In class recently, the professor mentioned sola scriptura — the Protestant belief that the Bible is the only source for Christian doctrine (as opposed to Orthodox and Catholic denominations, which include other sources). I’d never heard it before but it occurred to me that’s similar to what I’m doing with this project: documenting my personal response to the scripture without recourse to other authorities. And especially, I should say, without encumbering myself with the metaphysical issues.

I have since discovered that sola scriptura is the first of the Five Solas. Here are all five:

  1. Sola scriptura (“by Scripture alone”)
  2. Sola fide (“by faith alone”)
  3. Sola gratia (“by grace alone”)
  4. Solus Christus (“Christ alone”)
  5. Soli Deo gloria (“glory to God alone”)
